  1. What will the next 24 months demand of our CEO?
  2. Can our CEO lead the AI agenda, or only approve it?
  3. Is this a performance gap or a fit gap?
  4. Does the CFO scorecard match the exit plan?
  5. Who is ready now if we need a change?

The Signal

Summit Leadership Partners surveyed 176 private equity partners for a report released October 21, 2026. Fifty-two percent said a CEO's role can change enough that the leader no longer fits what the business needs.

Four in five call AI a core or primary lever for value creation, yet only 31% say their CEOs are leading AI transformation very effectively.

Longer hold periods sharpen the problem. The leader who built the platform is now asked to integrate, modernize and prepare for an exit date that keeps moving.

A strong operator can be the wrong leader for the next chapter. That is a design problem, not a character flaw.

How To Use The Fit Check

  1. Run it once a year, not only at the hire
  2. Answer question three honestly: is this a performance gap or a fit gap?
  3. Write down what the next 24 months demand and test the CEO and CFO scorecards against it
  4. Build the bench before you need it
